Built in 1922 , this building today houses The Goethe Institute at 657 Howard St. and, with Hawthorne St. addresses around the corner, the Michelin-starred restaurant Benu (22 Hawthorne St.), the Berggruen Gallery (10 Hawthorne St.), and Crown Point Press (20 Hawthorne St.). The brick decoration along the cornice and the columns between the upper-storey windows are notable.

Built in  1929 ,  631 Howard Street  is a five‑story brick and timber‑framed office building notable for its finely detailed façade with rhythmic brickwork. The building has been preserved and modernized through a renovation and retrofit that improved its seismic resilience and added contemporary infrastructure and finishes while retaining the historic character of its exterior.
